Two presenters from Ipswich Community Radio have been shortlisted in the annual national Community Radio Awards 2020.
13 year old Yanis & Stephen Spencer have made the shortlist, which was whittled down from more than 460 entries from 90 stations from every corner of the UK. Yanis has picked up a nomination in the “Young Person of the Year(under 25)” category, whilst Stephen was nominated in the “Volunteer of the Year” category for his work at Ipswich Community Radio, which can be heard in Ipswich on 105.7FM and on icrfm.com.
Nick Challenger Kabay, station manager, said: “This is certainly well deserved, people like Yanis & Stephen are the lifeblood of community radio and win or lose, everyone here is proud of them.”
Martin Steers, awards chair, said: “This year has been a challenge for the sector, but community radio stations have responded by stepping up engagement with their local communities, with more programming and innovative presenters across the country broadcasting from home. It is clear to see from this, that passionate presenters, volunteers, and staff are really there for their audiences. These local radio stations are truly at the heart of their communities.”
Yanis began his broadcasting career on ICR at the tender age of 10 and in the past three years has developed The Yanis Mix, 60 minutes of popular music, old and new, plus info & interviews.
Stephen is responsible for and co-hosts The Coronavirus Update Show which is broadcast during periods of lockdown and keeps the local community informed of both official advice and community organisations who can help those in need. He also was the lead in the construction of ICR’s Studio 2 facility.
You can find out more about Yanis’ show on his website (http://www.theyanismix.co.uk) or tune in every Tuesday from 5-6PM and Stephen can be heard on Tuesday 7-10AM on Ipswich Community Radio 105.7FM or icrfm.com
The Community Radio Awards will be announced live on Facebook & Youtube on Saturday 12th December at 7PM.
