Following his military career, Terence Victor Barnes (Terry) went back to university to study sports science. He then spent 23 years working as a lecturer at West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds until 2018. He has now embarked on a career as a writer. Terry’s first book was an autobiography. His second, and recently published, book is called “The Falklands War – From Peace To Conflict”. It covers his time during the Falklands War as well as his return home.
Terry comments, “40 Commando Royal Marines gets little or no coverage during the Falkland’s war. Many historians dismiss the unit as only playing the bland role of Brigade reserve. This was not the case. My concept in this new book is to give personal accounts by myself and individuals from, or attached to, 40 Commando Royal Marines and our adversaries from the Argentine Marines during Operation Corporate, 1982 (The Falklands War).” The book also gives insight of Terry’s childhood in Ipswich, training at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines in Devon as a 16 year old, the details of his lead up to, and his time during the Falklands War as well as his return home on the P&O SS Canberra.
Terry believes some aspects of his book may shock readers due to its honest and forthright approach. This is especially in relation to the performance of the Welsh Guards on land. There was even an unsubstantiated claim that Prince Andrew was a pilot during the only ‘hot’ helicopter day time attack at Sapper Hill carried out by Royal Marines.
The book has a foreword by Major General (Ret’d) Malcolm Hunt OBE FRSA. It also has a contribution by Brigadier (Ret’d) Andrew Pillar OBE. Plus it includes ‘A Critique (2022)’ on Crispin Black’s book. Black was a low ranking Welsh Guards Officer in 1982. ‘A Critique’ is by Lt Col (Ret’d) Ewen Southby-Tailyour OBE, the officer commanding the Task Force Landing Craft Squadron during the Falklands and now an established author.
‘The Falkland’s War – From Peace To Conflict’ by Terence Victor Barnes is available as hardback, paperback and ebook from all good book sellers.
