Mid-Suffolk Light Railway - logoThis will be the first big weekend of the 2024 season at the the Middy, Suffolk’s only standard gauge preserved railway.

The Easter Weekend emphasis will be on entertainment for families with children. All the Middy facilities will all be open. These include steam train rides on genuine Victorian 4-wheel coaches and the MSLR museum. Plus visits to the Restoration Shed, souvenir shop, café and the Middy real ale bar. There are also Easter Bunny hunts for younger visitors.

Guest locomotive Andrew Barclay 1910 built 0-4-0ST no.1219 ‘Caledonia Works’ will be the duty locomotive. Plus the 1906 Cockerill Steam Tram and the Heritage Railway Association’s Restoration Award wining Fowler diesel mechanical ‘Shreddie’, the Shredded Wheat Factory shunter.

Visitors will also be able to see progress on the restoration of the railway’s own locomotive, Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST 1604 and LNER Y7 no. 985 resident with us in the Lottery Funded Restoration Shed. Work is also continuing to progress on the extension of the line to just over twice its current length to a new build destination station, to be called Aspall Halt.

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, the 2015 Suffolk Museum of the Year, offers a fascinating picture of what life was like on and around a rural railway during the early part of the last century. It will be a great day out for families and railfans alike.
