Summer Programme at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway
The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway – Suffolk’s award winning only standard gauge heritage railway – will have vintage trains and added attractions every Sunday and Bank Holiday in August.
2nd August – Steam Railway Day & Land Rover Owners visit.
Steam train rides and a display of military and civilian vehicles will give visitors a real impression of the number of variations made to this iconic British design over the years. The Series 1 Land Rover entered production in 1948, with inspiration from the WWII jeeps. It was one of the first 4-wheel drive civilian vehicles.
The Middy volunteers will be in action to provide vintage train rides in the Victorian coaches. Also all the usual facilities will be available including the Museum, Restoration Shed visits Team Room and real ale bar.
9th August – Steam Railway Day & Stonham Barns Big Bus Day, including shuttle buses to and from the Stonham Barns Big Bus Show.
Today the Middy will be joined by their friends of The Eastern Counties Bus Preservation Group who organise the Stonham Barns Big Bus Day. Visitors to the railway will also be able to visit the Big Bus Day at Stonham Barns. That will host a magnificent display of around 100 vintage buses, some of which will be running a shuttle service to Brockford Station and return. Bus rides to Stonham Barns are free and there is 40 % discount on entry to the Big Bus Day for Middy visitors.
All the Middy attractions will be open including rides to the full length of the Middy railway, now a nearly two kilometre round trip. They will also be visited by the Old Ram Vintage Tractor Club today who will be bringing a display of machine from farms of yesteryear.
16th August – Steam Railway Day Plus Vintage Commercial Vehicles & Royal Enfield Owners Visit.
The Middy are promised a selection of vintage commercial vehicles, of all shapes and sizes. These will include their our own 1934 Dennis 4 ton flatbed, which is maintained by two volunteers. Also visiting will be the Royal Enfield Motor Cycle Owners Club, again through a Middy volunteer connection.
Perhaps a good time to remind readers The Middy is entirely run by volunteers. The railway is always on the lookout for more enthusiasts with varied skills, not just engine drivers, to join them.
23rd August – Model Mania & Hornby Collectors Day.
The annual celebration of models of all types and sizes, not just railways. But as always the railway is pleased to welcome the Hornby Collectors club. They will bring layouts of the much missed Hornby and Dublo brand trains. These greatly influenced the popularity of model railways in general. Also amongst the displays will be table top exhibits from The Thurrock Scale Model Club and military models from the Middy’s Workshop Manager.
30th & 31st August – Road & Rail Steam Gala.
The final weekend of the summer season with plenty of action on the railway with two locos in steam. In addition a selection of road traction engines, both full size and models. This promises to be a splendid day out for steam lovers. Of course, all the Middy facilities will be open. These include the Museum, Restoration Shed, Tea Room, Real Ale Bar and Souvenir Shop.
