Steam trains and added attractions every Sunday and Bank Holiday.
20th August – Diesel Day
Middy steam locomotives are often joined by our diesel locos giving shunting demonstrations. But today the diesels will be the stars. There are two operational at the moment.
The first is Heritage Railway Association award winning Shredded Wheat Company shunter. This pretty little engine may be diesel powered, but its copper capped exhaust chimney gives it a very steam like effect. The second is the railway’s own Ruston & Hornsby 165, built for the West Midlands Gas Board in 1951 and, after several other owners, arrived at the Middy in 1998 as a shunter, fall back and general duty loco.
Both will be in operation today.
27th & 28th August – Model Mania & Hornby Collectors Days
A welcome return to modellers with their many variations of the modelling hobby featuring trains, boats, planes and road vehicles. Plus displays and layouts by collectors of the late lamented Hornby and Hornby Dublo model railways.
Apart from the individual modellers and demonstrators there will be exhibitions from the Norwich Model Boat Club, the Thurrock Scale Model Club, the Mid-Suffolk Radio Control Model Club and the Gipping Valley Model Boat Club.
3rd September – Steam Railway & Vintage Tractor Day plus a visit from Malcolm Root, Vice Chairman of the Guild of Railway Artists.
The last open day of the the 2023 season with all the Middy attractions up and running plus the annual display of vintage tractors by the Tivetshall Old Ram Vintage Tractor Club, who always put on a splendid show for us.
Also visiting today will be Malcolm Root, the Vice-Chairman the Guild of Railway Artists, who will be signing limited edition prints of his latest work, a magnificent image of the Middy at Laxfield in the British Railways period.
Each day the railway is open. Visitors can enjoy train rides as many times as they like. Plus all the MSLR facilities – Museum, shop, café, Restoration Shed visits and real ale bar – will be open too.
