The Ipswich Transport Museum is a modern-day Aladdin’s Cave. It can be found at the Old Trolleybus Depot, Cobham Road, Ipswich, IP3 9JD. In September, it will be open every Sunday from 11am until 4pm.
Looking ahead they have a Classic Vehicle Day on Saturday 5th of October from 11am until 4pm. This is an informal gathering of museum and visiting vehicles, celebrating classic cars and light commercials. Included is a free bus tour of the local area.
The Museum is home to about 100 major exhibits, almost all of which were manufactured and or operated in and around Ipswich. These include lorries, fire engines, ambulances, electric vehicles, bicycles, as well as lots of trams, trolleybuses and motor buses.
The museum is also home to the Ipswich Engineering Collection which includes examples of Ransoms Simms & Jeffries agricultural implements and one of their Combine Harvesters, Ransome & Rapier cranes, Compaire Reavell air compressors, Cranes valves and Turner grain handling equipment. There are also displays featuring a Garage workshop, a Motor cycle workshop, and a Cycle repair shop. Displayed on the walls are a large selection of enamelled signs.
Recently returned to the museum you will also find an Eastern Counties Bristol “K” double decker bus.
Current restorations include a Bedford WLB bus, a Daimler funeral hearse, an ex Ipswich single deck Ransomes trolleybus 44 and a Tilling Stevens double deck petrol/electric motor bus.
There is a well-stocked gift shop and the Sunbeam tea room serving hot and cold snacks and beverages.
