On 7th March Marija Droze released ‘Broken Glass’.

This track comes from Marija’s new album, ‘Maria with a ‘J’’. We’ve previously heard ‘Cry Baby Cry’ (Week 52, June 2022) which is also on this album.

Marija Droze was born in the small Eastern European country of Lithuania. There was always a spiritual beckoning toward music from as early as she could remember. Some of her earliest musical influences were not typical of a small-town girl in that part of the world. She found solace in genres foreign to her surroundings; she identified with artists that were completely different and somewhat unknown in that day, time and place.

Marija spent the better half of her life studying music in some of Europe’s top music universities where she honed her skills as a vocalist, classic pianist and majoring in music theory. Fast forward to a festival, and she met the love of her life, who also was deeply involved in the music she admired. Her husband of 10 years, Billy Droze, a very accomplished artist in his own right, was on tour and Lithuania just happened to be one of the stops. The couple have gone on to record multiple albums together, with Marija lending her angelic harmony and lead vocals.

Speaking about ‘Broken Glass’ Billy says, “This song was supposed to happen, we were at a photo shoot with the famed photographer Anthony Scarlati when he captured the coolest picture of Marija behind a broken window pane and said “Y’all should write a song called Broken Glass” and I went home to my studio and began construction, it turned out cool! Just goes to show you songs can come from anywhere.

Eimear released ‘I Am Woman’ on 8th March.

Eimear Crehan is delighted to release the first new single since the release of her last album in 2022. This brand new track ‘I Am Woman’ is a powerful anthem. It features a 22 piece female choir and came out on International Women’s Day, March 8th 2023. This deeply moving, passionate and powerful song takes the listener on a fabulous journey through all the nuances that are involved in the human experience. The choir add so much to that listening experience.

Eimear is well known for her incredible lyrics and storytelling and this song is no different. She wrote this for a friend, Dearbhla Mescal, who is going through some treatment. It’s about how inspiring this friend was, standing in her power while being so vulnerable and encouraging others to stand with her and not look away. The song encapsulates so much about the strength of women, it’s such a strong poignant and beautiful message. With fantastic vocals, top notch instrumentation, fabulous production and finish, this song needs to be heard by the world!

We heard ‘Gone’ by The Magic Es a couple of months back (Week 81, January 2023), and they’ve now released ‘Give Me Something’.

Since 2015, The Magic Es have released 2 critically acclaimed albums, 2 EPs and 6 singles. They’ve received radio play across the globe on 100s of stations and they’ve done this without the backing of any label; pure, hard work and a love for making and playing music.

Lead singer, Pete Thompson, says, “’Give Me Something’ is about having someone that has your back despite the world not necessarily turning the way you want. Despite the chaos, knowing someone believes in you keeps you going! I wrote it quickly last summer and when we went into the studio to record it, I had a clear vision that it should sound like David Bowie’s Heroes crossed with Talking Heads and ELO…I think we got close.

As well as releasing music at a remarkable rate they’re no slouches when it comes to performing. They’re now gigging up and down the country on a regular basis.

21-year-old rock guitarist and songwriter, Jaime Orr, is an up and coming talent not to be missed. Jamie was exposed to bands like AC/DC and Audioslave from a very early age. Playing guitar helped him to overcome major speech difficulties, allowing him to express himself beyond the use of words. It was a huge turning point and is the reason he’s dedicated himself to a life in music. He says, “The instrument is why I am able to articulate words the way I do now.

His music focuses on tough themes interspersed with positive messages. Soft ballad type verses influenced by John Mayer combined with hard hitting guitar riff-based choruses inspired by grunge and hard rock bands such as Royal Blood and Nirvana.

Mad Painter is a new band in the Boston area, deeply rooted in the melodic rock tradition of the 1970s. They play mostly original music, ranging from Woodstock-era psychedelic rock to glam-tinged rock ‘n’ roll a-la Mott the Hoople and the Faces and to epic heavy anthems in the vein of Uriah Heep. It consists of four individuals with wildly ranging backgrounds.

At the centre of Mad Painter is Alex Gitlin, the songwriter and creator of the concept. He is backed capably by drummer Al Hendry, as well as bassist Kenne Highland, a true veteran of the Boston rock scene and the newest addition is guitarist Al Naha. They’ve played, in different line-ups and guises and in many venues around the Boston area. It’s always a good time when you come to their shows, and you know what to expect – nostalgic 70s rock vibes and stage gear to match, great musicianship and songs that will make you get up and bop around, singing and clapping along.
